Looking back at his past work, it can be said that Osamu Sugiyama is an electronic-music producer, DJ and guitarist. During his teenage years he formed a rock band called TRNC with his high-school friends, and began to create music. Their locally produced original album sold more than 1,000 copies. This experience, and the people he worked with during it, helped shape the foundation of his music ever since.
Soon his music became more geometric, with moiré and dub processes moving out of minimal phrases, after he was influenced by the likes of Steve Reich and Massive Attack.
Entering a university in Tokyo, he started to create electronic tracks using a sampler to play at clubs.
He played not only as a DJ but also in a small dub-band and live-sets with a laptop, changing his style accordingly.
After he graduated from university, he started to work at "Sound & Recording" magazine as an editor. Through this job he met many music creators and decided to join the energetic domestic dance music label, 2E2L Recordings, releasing “Umbilical Residue EP” in January 2010. It features tech-house with a deep melody and techno-beat. Osamu, however, has not solely focused on this genre of dance floor-like type music he has also constantly released music which is outside of the general mainstream view such as electronica, down-tempo and slow-core, influenced by BEDHEAD, a band whom Osamu respects.
During this time he has been searching for his own original sound from various influences.
He’s recently been performing as a DJ, at live performances and hosting parties called “compass”. He also energetically takes part in collaborating with other artists and producing remixes of other’s works. Currently Osamu is involved in a wide range of the music industry, from writing reviews of newly released albums, to designing flyers.
